Outdoor Education

St Joseph's logoOn Friday after school, Mrs Bell and Mr Wales took a group of year 7 and 8 pupils to Derwentwater Independent Youth Hostel, Borrowdale on an overnight outward bound residential. We arrived at around 4.45pm to unpack, explore the centre, and some even played table tennis before a hearty 3 course meal.  We then did some problem solving games where we needed to work as a team and learn each other’s names.  We set off on our night walk at around 7pm and summited Bleaberry Fell (590m) at around 9.30pm. When we got back to the hostel, we had a camp fire in the grounds with some biscuits!

The next morning we were up at 7.30am for an 8am breakfast. This was an all-you-can buffet with sausage, bacon, hash browns, toast, croissants, cereal – the full works! This set us up well for the day. We got packed up and our rooms emptied and headed out onto Derwentwater in the canoes. It was very windy so it was hard paddling into the wind! We arrived on the shore at Kettlewell carpark, locked the canoes up and went ghyll scrambling up Ladore Falls. This required us to help each other as there was a lot of scrambling involved and some sections were tricky. We all got very wet! We then returned to the canoes, had some lunch on the shore and paddled back to the hostel. On the way we played some games and did some swimming. We returned to St Joseph’s at around 5.30pm on Saturday night, shattered but we had all had a great time.
